Duerschmidt was a familiar face in Westhampton Beach, delivering mail in her raccoon hat and red lipstick. 

Thanking the board for recognizing her service, Duerschmidt told one of her many stories from the job.

Audience members were in stitches as Duerschmidt recalled a day when she tried to help a few kids whose ball rolled into the street. Duerschmidt said she decided to kick the ball back to the kids, thinking it was a bouncy ball, however, as her foot hit the ball....

"I saw stars," she said.

Rather than a bouncy ball, it was a bowling ball.

In her retirement Duerschmidt said she plans to focus on her painting. Aside from being known as the mail lady, she is also a well-known area artist.
