Westhampton Free Library Celebrates 125 Years

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — An iconic Westhampton Beach institution, a gathering place and community hub, celebrated its 125th anniversary Tuesday.

The Westhampton Free Library marked the day by distributing free tote bags to patrons and unveiling a new banner that adorns the front of the library building.

“We are grateful to celebrate our 125th year,” said Library Director Danielle Waskiewicz. “We look forward to new milestones, programs and events, and to putting the pandemic behind us.”

The Westhampton Free Library first opened its doors on Main Street on March 1, 1897, with a charter granted by the University of the State of New York and signed by Melvil Dewey, creator of the Dewey Decimal System, library officials siad.

Since then, the library has relocated twice and undergone several expansions and renovations, including the latest in 2001. The library has also grown to provide numerous programs and services to community members.
