Public Hearing On Heartland Project Cancelled

The meeting was scheduled for Tuesday night after the Town of Huntington Supervisor filed an objection.

BRENTWOOD, NY - The public hearing to discuss the Heartland Town Square development scheduled for Tuesday evening has been cancelled.

The meeting was arranged last week after an objection was filed by Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone citing traffic concerns on Commack Road and Sagtikos Parkway.

However, because the entire Huntington Town Board did not officiate the letter the Suffolk County Planning Commission was advised by their legal team to cancel the hearing, Newsday reports.

A Huntington Town spokesman told Newsday that the letter followed the proper format in filing the objection and that the Town's opinion on the project has not changed.

In July, the Islip Town Board unanimously voted to approve a zoning change for the project so that the 450-acre property purchased by Jerry Wolkoff back in 2002 for a total of $20 million so that construction could begin.

The zone change allows for the construction of 9,000 apartments, 3.2 million square feet of office space as well as 1 million square feet of retail built over the next 32 years.

At the last public meeting held in April, hundreds of local residents and business owners spoke out both for and against the project.
