Sound Off: DMV Eye Exams

A new Patch feature encouraging discussion and debate among readers.

New York drivers may no longer have to take an eye exam to renew their licenses under a new policy enacted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration last week.

After a bevy of controversy, though, the two-day-old Department of Motor Vehicles rule change was put on hold as state officials are now re-considering the move they had originally said would save the state money and make it easier for drivers to renew their licenses online or by mail. Six other states don't require an eye exam for license renewals.

Critics say allowing drivers to "self-certify" that their vision is good enough to get behind the wheel is a recipe for disaster on the roads.
