Suffolk Officer Charged With Reckless Endangerment After Deadly Wrong-Way Crash

The Third Precinct officer has been suspended without pay, police say.

UPDATE: The off-duty officer involved in the deadly crash on Sunrise Highway in West Islip on Tuesday morning was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, according to Suffolk Police.

Investigators determined the Third Precinct officer, identified as 24-year-old Robert Scheuerer, was driving his 2000 Nissan Pathfinder eastbound in the westbound lanes, police.

He was suspended without pay, police said. Scheuerer remains hospitalized and will be arraigned at a later date.

The investigation is continuing and additional charges may be forthcoming, police said.

WEST ISLIP, NY — One man was killed and an off-duty police officer was seriously hurt in a crash on Sunrise Highway Tuesday morning, according to Suffolk County Police.

According to police, a 2016 Ford van and a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder were involved in crash on westbound Sunrise Highway between exits 39 and 40 at 4:38 a.m.

The van caught fire, and the driver, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Nissan, an off-duty Suffolk County police officer, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
