NYCLU to Host Local H.S Students at Bill of Rights Day Commemoration
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 01, 2011 – On Thursday, Dec. 15, the New York Civil Liberties Union’s Lower Hudson Valley Chapter will host area high school students from Thornton, Eastchester, Hendrick Hudson, Tuckahoe and Clarkstown South at its annual Bill of Rights Day celebration at St. Paul’s Historic Site in Mt. Vernon.
This year’s program, which marks the 220th anniversary of the adoption of the Bill of Rights, will focus on school bullying in the context of students’ constitutional rights. It will include a discussion of the Dignity Act – a new state law that will provide students in public schools a safe, nurturing educational environment once it takes effect in 2012.
The event’s program will include a reading of the Bill of Rights by individual students; a discussion on bullying led by Prof. Ralph Stein, a law professor at Pace University School of Law; and a talk by Jim Bostic, the executive director of the Nepperhan Community Center in Yonkers.
The event will also feature awards presented to the winners of the chapter’s annual Bill of Rights Essay Contest. This year’s contest asked students to consider how school administrators should address bullying.
