How to Challenge High-Achievers Without Burning Them Out

As summer break reaches its midpoint, many parents of high-achieving students start looking for ways to keep the momentum going. The challenge? How to provide meaningful
academic enrichment without risking burnout.

"Gifted and high-performing students thrive when given opportunities to explore their interests in deeper ways, but even they need balance," says Rosey Sopariwala of the White Plains Huntington Learning Center. "It's not about piling on more work. It's about creating enriching, student-centered learning that builds skills, curiosity, and confidence."

Below, Sopariwala shares ways to help advanced learners stay engaged this summer, without the stress of over-scheduling or academic burnout.

1. Make Learning Feel Like Play: For high-achieving students, enrichment doesn’t have to look like more worksheets. Encourage your student to dive into activities that combine creativity, challenges, and critical thinking.
   Help them join a local chess club to sharpen logic and strategic thinking
   • Encourage them to explore creative writing through storytelling prompts or poetry challenges
   • Use recycled materials to build a new creation
   • Enroll your student in a robotics or coding camp to apply math skills in a hands-on way
   "Advanced learners are often motivated by curiosity. Give them outlets that allow them to
   explore, build, and discover at their own pace," Sopariwala says.
2. Explore Vocabulary & Reading Challenges: Gifted readers can expand their comprehension and vocabulary skills through engaging summer reading goals.
   Try these ideas:
   ● Help your student work through an advanced vocabulary workbook or app
   ● Encourage your student to read one new genre each month (e.g., biography, historical fiction, science fiction)
   ● Ask them to research a favorite author or time period and share what they’ve learned at dinner
   ● Help them join an active reading challenge like Huntington’s Summer Reading Adventure
   
   Reading builds a strong foundation for writing, test prep, and critical thinking, and summer is a great time to read for fun and depth.
3. Balance Learning with Downtime
   One of the most common pitfalls for high-achieving students is pushing themselves too hard.
   Parents can help by setting healthy expectations:
   ● Let your child help design their summer learning plan around their interests
   ● Mix enrichment activities with plenty of free time, outdoor play, and social connections
   ● Turn everyday outings, like visits to museums, zoos, or science centers, into fun learning opportunities by asking open-ended questions, exploring exhibits together, or following up with a related book or project at home
   ● Build real-world skills by involving your child in tasks like creating a grocery budget, doubling a recipe, or helping plan the most efficient route for the family road trip
