Deborah Kass, whose work is in the Neuberger Museum's permanent collection, is an American artist who explores the intersection of pop culture, art history, and the self. She works in mixed media, and is most recognized for her paintings, prints, photography, sculptures, and neon lighting installations. Kass mimics and reworks signature styles of iconic male artists of the 20th century including Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and Ed Ruscha. Her technique of appropriation is a critical commentary on the intersection of social power relations, personal identity, and the historically dominant position of male artists in the art world. Kass's Day After Day, a site-specific, large-scale digital print commissioned by the Neuberger Museum, will be on view beginning October 20 at Neuberger Museum of Art SPACE I 42, the Museum's new public space in Manhattan, located at 33 West 42nd St. This is the artist’s first wallpaper work, inspired, in part, by Warhol’s signature Cow (1966) and Mao (1974) wallpaper, and marks an exciting new direction in her practice.

Joanna Gleason, a Tony Award-winning musical theater actress, has won critical acclaim for the forthright intelligence of her performances and the elegant grace she brings to her roles. She made her Broadway debut in the 1977 musical hit by Cy Coleman "I Love My Wife," and her many roles have included the friend of the parents of a spastic child in "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg" (1985); the Baker's Wife, who movingly yearns for a child in the Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical "Into the Woods" (1987); and the feminine half of the famed sleuthing team in the 1991 musical "Nick and Nora."

The Neuberger Museum of Art opened on the campus of Purchase College, SUNY, in 1974, with a core collection donated by one of the greatest private collectors, philanthropists, and arts advocates of the twentieth century, Roy R. Neuberger. The collection contains important works by some of our best-known artists, including Milton Avery, Romare Bearden, Willem de Kooning, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock. Housed in a building designed by Philip Johnson, the permanent collection now encompasses more than 7,000 works of contemporary, modern, and African art.

Today, the Neuberger is more active and vibrant than ever. Critically acclaimed exhibitions, regularly accompanied by catalogues, draw local, regional, and international audiences. Our signature biannual award, The Roy R. Neuberger Exhibition Prize, recognizes the work of exceptional young artists, continuing our founder’s dedication to supporting those in early careers. A wealth of educational tours, lectures, and interactive programs engage the many parts of our broad community. On any day, you can see Purchase College students and faculty, families with young children, K-12 school children and their teachers, and seniors. The Neuberger Museum of Art is a center of teaching and learning for all stages of life: a place where appreciating art is both active and interactive; where the student, the scholar, the artist and the art lover find common ground to experiment, question, and grow.
