Possible Explosive Device At Downtown Apartment Building Is Rendered Safe, According To Cops

WHITE PLAINS, NY — A scary scene played out in White Plains after reports of an explosion, and the discovery of a suspicious device.
On Monday morning, the White Plains Police Department successfully resolved the fraught incident involving a suspicious device.
White Plains police initially received calls reporting what was thought to be a transformer explosion near Odell Avenue, at 4:28 a.m. Units responded and conducted checks of transformers in the area, but did not find any signs of damage.

The situation suddenly changed at 6:08 a.m., when a White Plains police officer spotted what appeared to be a small explosive device near the doorway of an apartment building on Odell Avenue.
Additional units reached the location to establish a perimeter, and residents in the area were instructed to shelter in place as a precautionary measure, according to police.

The White Plains Police Department Emergency Services Unit, working with the Westchester County Hazardous Devices Unit, soon rendered the device safe. The device was then secured and turned over to the Westchester County Police Department.
Police officials said this morning's events are under investigation by the White Plains Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, with the assistance of federal law enforcement.
Police said they are interviewing two people of interest related to the investigation.
"We are pleased to report that there were no reported injuries to anyone or damage to any property," the department said in a statement. "At this time, there appears to be no ongoing threat to the public, and our citizens are safe to resume normal activity in the area."
Officials said there may be some temporary road closures as the investigation continues.
"We understand that this morning's events caused concern, and we want to assure the public that the safety of our residents remains our top priority," White Plains Public Safety said. "We extend our appreciation to the local residents who called in to report suspicious activity overnight. Your vigilance is a vital component of public safety ... As always, if you see something, say something."
