Senate Majority Leader Andrew Stewart-Cousins urged New Yorkers to take advantage of early voting opportunities. This is the first year the state offered early voting in a presidential election.

"We see many thousands of New Yorkers now lining up at polling sites throughout the state to have their voices heard," she said in a statement sent to Patch.

With election day less than a week away, "I hope every eligible New York voters will step up and exercise their constitutional right to vote," Stewart-Cousins said.

There are long lines for early voters throughout the Hudson Valley.

In Putnam County Wednesday morning, a long line of voters huddled under umbrellas around the building housing the county Board of Elections.

One of the voters was Rachel Rothenstein-Henry, 22, of Mahopac.

She told Patch she thought it would be a good time to come because the rain would keep people away, but she stayed away.

"I need to vote, you have to vote no matter what," Rothenstein-Henry said. "It's kind of nice to see that so many people are willing to stand out in the rain to vote."

Tuesday evening there were lines at the Boardman Road Branch Library and the Dutchess County Board of Elections, two of the county's five early voting sites.

Around 5:30 p.m. the line at the library went completely around the building. About 15 minutes later, the line at the board of elections in Poughkeepsie went from the office's entrance up and around the corner onto Academy Street, making for a wait of about an hour.
