12-Year-Old Brings Gun to Williamsburg School: Reports
A J.H.S. 50 John D. Wells School teacher found a 9mm handgun in a student's backpack Tuesday morning, according to reports.
WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — Police detained a 12-year-old who brought a gun to his Williamsburg school Tuesday, according to reports.
A teacher at J.H.S. 50 John D. Wells School on South Third and Roebling streets received a tip around 11:30 a.m. that a student had a 9mm Ruger in his backpack, the New York Post reported.
After the teacher called the boy into the office and found the unloaded gun, school safety officers took him into their custody, according to the Post.

"This serious incident was immediately reported and the NYPD swiftly and safely recovered the item," a Department of Education spokeswoman said in a statement to NBC News.
"We're working closely with the NYPD as they conduct an investigation, and we'll ensure the school takes appropriate follow-up action."

The student had not been charged as of early Tuesday evening.
