Ferries Get New Horns After Waterfront Residents Complain Of Incessant Honking: Report

The new horns have a lower tone and face the rear of the boat.

WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg just got a big city Hornblower to take it down a notch, according to reports.

City ferries are now running with a new, low-pitched horn after residents living near the water complained about the boats’ shrieking honks, DNAinfo New York reported Monday.

The New York City Citywide Ferry service began using the new horns over the weekend, a spokesman for Hornblower, the company that runs the boats, told DNAinfo.

"NYC Ferry heard from community members loud and clear," Joshua Knoller reportedly said. "As part of our commitment to enhancing overall quality of service, we recently completed the installation of new, rear-facing and lower decibel horns across our entire fleet."

Since the new ferry service launched in May, boats have been departing from Williamsburg, DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights and Red Hook every 20 minutes, seven days a week.

They have carried more than 500,000 riders across the East River.

The high ferry ridership has been the cause of overcrowding, long lines and delays and the city has promised to provide three extra boats by the end of 2017.
