Greenpoint NYPD Captain Promoted After Controversial Rape Comment
NYPD Capt. Peter Rose will be promoted less than a year after he said he was not "too worried about" a 62 percent uptick in sexual assaults.

GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN — The NYPD captain who outraged Greenpoint locals by claiming he wasn’t “too worried” about an uptick in rape reports will receive a raise and a promotion on Tuesday, officials said.
Captain Peter Rose — commanding officer of Greenpoint’s 94th Precinct — will be promoted to deputy inspector and receive an undisclosed pay raise in honor of “his accomplishments as an executive,” said police.
The promotion and raise come less than a year after Rose made controversial statements about how his department was not concerned about a 62 percent increase in sexual assaults because only two were “true stranger rapes.”

"It's not a trend that we're too worried about,” Rose said of the 13 sexual assaults to occur in the 94th precinct in 2016.
“If there's a true stranger rape, a random guy picks up a stranger off the street, those are the troubling ones. That person has, like, no moral standards."

The 94th Precinct also drew criticism in April when officers dropped charges against two men accused of raping a woman in a portable toilet because of “inconsistencies” in the woman’s story.
Local women organized a candlelit vigil after the attack to decry NYPD policies, during which several attendees suggested taking action against Captain Rose.
Residents and community leaders expressed their outrage on Tuesday that the NYPD would honor Rose with a promotion.
“Less than one year ago, Captain Rose shocked our city with his egregious comments trivializing sexual assault,” said Sonia Ossorio, president of the advocacy group, the National Organization for Women - New York City.
“This promotion is an affront to women and sends the message that how the NYPD addresses rape is not a top priority."
A spokesman from Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office, Austin Finan, said, “The mayor doesn’t get involved in the promotion process and certainly wasn’t involved in this one.”
Police released a statement from Deputy Chief Timothy Trainor in response to Patch’s request for comment.
“[Rose] is being recognized for his accomplishments as an executive and was selected for a promotion from captain to deputy inspector,” he said.
Deputy Inspector Rose will continue to head the 94th Precinct, said police.
