W'burg Goodwill Offers Sustainable Collection For Earth Day

Goodwill will hold an Earth Day event in Brooklyn this weekend with "earth conscious" shopping options and a clothing recycling center.

WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — For most people, tree planting or other outdoor activities likely come to mind when thinking about Earth Day, but not all celebrations of sustainability necessarily involve interacting with nature.

Goodwill New York/New Jersey will celebrate the holiday in a different way. The nonprofit has set up an Earth Day event this weekend at its Williamsburg location that will instead promote sustainability in the fashion world.

Starting at noon on Saturday, those who visit The Canvas at 132 Bedford Avenue can shop a specifically-curated "earth conscious" collection and get the opportunity to epicycle their own clothes.

Sustainable style influencer Tania Gabriela has curated the collection for Goodwill. Gabriela, who lives in the West Village, rates and reviews thrift stores for their sustainability and created StyleLend, a peer-to-peer clothing rental company.

The event will also feature complimentary drinks and snacks, a dance area to "celebrate our planet and empower people with barriers to employment" and a kid's creative corner where they can make an "animal grass head."

The event falls a few days before Earth Day, which will be celebrated on April 22.

The location is the same space Goodwill NYNJ held its pop-up Brooklyn location earlier this year.

The two also have teamed up for Earth Day before. The studio used textiles collected by Goodwill NYNJ in 2017 to create a spring fashion line for a show presented on Earth Day that year.

The Canvas outpost is a "collection of multipurpose spaces hosting and facilitating experiences and events aimed at addressing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals," the release said.
