All Hands On Deck As Firefighters Battle 2-Alarm Blaze At Restaurant

An early morning fire at Coral restaurant was tackled by the Somers Volunteer Fire Department with a little help from their friends.

SOMERS, NY — A stubborn two-alarm fire at a popular seafood restaurant brought support for the Somers Volunteer Fire Department from as far away as Mahopac.

The blaze broke out at Coral restaurant on Rte. 6 at around 2 a.m. on Monday, when the Somers Fire Department was dispatched for a commercial alarm. The fire chief was the first to arrive on the scene just minutes after dispatch. He reported nothing showing from the exterior and investigated.

Upon entry, he noted a slight odor of burning and found heavy smoke pushing from an interior wall in the direction of the kitchen. The chief made his way to the rear of the building to find fire pushing out of the structure.

A working structure fire (10-75) was called to bring in additional resources to the scene. Additional Somers units quickly arrived at the fire. Hand lines were deployed, and Route 6 was shut down.

Neighboring mutual aid companies arrived on scene and assisted Somers to extinguish the fire. Due to the location of the fire, crews opened up walls and ceilings, and vented the roof in order to help extinguish the fire, according to fire officials.

Additional resources needed to be called to the scene, making it a Second Alarm fire. The Somers Fire Department and mutual aid units operated for approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes before returning to service.

The Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department, the Bedford Hills Fire Department, the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department, the Katonah Fire Department, the Croton Falls Fire Department, the Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association/Lake Mohegan Professional Firefighters Local 2956, the Golden's Bridge Fire Department, the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Westchester EMS 45 Medic-2, Westchester County Department of Emergency Services Units, the South Salem Fire Department, the Mount Kisco Volunteer Fire Department and the New York State Police all lent a hand either at the scene, during the investigation, or when offering coverage while Somers firefighters were otherwise engaged.
