Mahopac: 'Best Marching Band'

The Mahopac High School Marching Band has been named the 2013 trophy award winner for the “Best Marching Band” for its performance in the 37th annual Putnam Northern Westchester St. Patrick’s Day Parade March 10.

The band, with 45 student musicians and a crew of color guards, will be honored March 22 at 7 p.m. in a ceremony at the Knights of Columbus hall in Carmel.

High school music teacher Stephen Wands is the band director; teacher Rich Williams is assistant director; and teacher Stas Przymylski isband assistant. Ashley Kenna leads the 15-member color guard.

“The award was based solely on our performance at the parade,” Wands said. “I’m not sure how many other bands competed but there were quite a few.”

The parade, with numerous participants, from Girl Scouts and Irish dancers to veterans and firemen, drew thousands along the Route 6 parade route.

Performance was judged by representatives of the parade sponsors: The Friendly Sons of St. PatrickEmerald Association of Putnam County Fraternal Order of Police,  Irish American Social Club of Yorktown, the Westchester Putnam Gaelic Football Club and the Knights of Columbus.
