An Interview with Shihan Joe Galbraith

I have been with Jim Smith Karate for 18 years, since the age of 6.

What makes this business so special?

Jim Smith Karate is so special because we dedicate the time and appropriate staff to accommodate each student individually. We take great pride in what we do and aim to make every student a stronger person physically, mentally, and socially.

What’s the difference between Jim Smith Karate and other karate schools?

Although I can not speak for all Dojo’s I think we are different than many in that we have a “belts earned, never bought,” outlook. We do not charge belt, or test fees, so there is no pressure about promotions and money. The material is taught and when you can apply it – advancements are made. This also gives a great sense of achievement, especially in children. You are rewarded based on your own hard work.

What is your passion as an instructor?

I am most passionate about character development and confidence in our students, as well as their ability to defend themselves. When I have a shy, or previously bullied student, I aim to see them stand tall, and walk with confidence. To know they can defend themselves, and be proud of what they’re doing. I feel truly accomplished.

What are some of your notable awards?

I competed very successfully mostly throughout my high school, and college years. Most notably I have won Gold in Kata competition in Jamaica at the World Cup, A Silver in Kata in Canada, and Gold as a  18-29 National Krane fighter. I have had a lot of great opportunities as a student here.

Any tips for students?

I would say to students that they need to set reasonable goals for themselves. With every session have an Aim and do your best. Before you realize you’ll have gained so much more than you had ever expected. Also, don’t be afraid to visit other schools, film yourself, and watch lower ranks. You will see what you’re worth!
