NEW YORK — The list of calls for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign keeps expanding.

President Joe Biden, Speaker of House Nancy Pelosi, The New York Times editorial board, state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and state Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie have all said that Cuomo can no longer stay in office.

In a pre-recorded statement released after James's report, Cuomo was defiant in his response and said his office would release its own report that would put the facts in a different light.

The report called James's findings "unfair and inaccurate," adding that they ignored Cuomo's testimony and "substantial corroborating evidence."

The New York Times editorial board reminded its readers that last winter it called for an investigation into the accusations of sexual misconduct and harassment by Cuomo and that it questioned whether he could continue as New York's governor.

The board came to a conclusion that, regardless of the results of any legal consequences Cuomo may face, there is only one option: "He should resign."

In a Marist Poll conducted Tuesday night, 59 percent of registered Democrats said Cuomo should resign from office.

Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist Poll, said the court of public opinion believes the allegations against Cuomo warrant his removal from office.

"If he does not resign, nearly six in 10 New Yorkers believe he should be impeached," he said. "Even if he survives this scandal, his reelection prospects are rock bottom with even his Democratic base deserting him."

The Marist Poll was a survey of 614 adults conducted Tuesday. The margin of error is ±5.1 percent.
