This forum will address lymphedema, a potential side effect of breast cancer surgery and radiation therapy. It occurs when too much lymph collects in any area of the body. Bring your questions, and hear our speakers address the following questions and topics: What is lymphedema and why does it occur? What is the incidence of lymphedema after breast cancer? What are some of the risk factors? What is Axillary Web Syndrome? Why does it occur after breast surgery? How is it treated? The use of pre-operative baseline measurements, such as the “L-Dex.” Surveillance recommendations and risk reduction practices. Treatment techniques such as decongestive therapy, bandages and garments.

Speakers: Mary Greco, MS, FNP-C, has 30 years’ experience in the area of Breast Disease. At Northern Westchester Hospital she serves as clinical coordinator for the Breast Institute. She has a special interest in the areas of high risk and the prevention and treatment of lymphedema in breast cancer patients.

JoAnn Stafford, PT, CLY-LANA, has over 25 years’ experience as a physical therapist. She was a senior physical therapist and an active member of the mastectomy program at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. A breast cancer survivor herself, JoAnn developed an interest in lymphedema PT and overall wellness for breast cancer patients. Her goal is to promote health and continued well ness for any patient dealing with cancer and/or lymphedema.
