Hot Jobs in NY: Health, Education

YORKTOWN, NY — Health and education continue to outpace all other job sectors in New York, according to new data from the state Labor Department.

And while professional and business services continued to add jobs, the "financial activities" sector, which includes finance, insurance and real estate, shrank.

Here's the over-the-year change in jobs by major industry sector in New York State occurring between November 2015 and November 2016.

Sectors With Job Gains:

• Educational & Health Services* +61,800
• Trade, Transportation & Utilities +15,200
• Leisure & Hospitality +14,800
• Professional & Business Services +12,900
• Other Services +11,400
• Government* +3,600
• Information +2,100

Sectors With Job Losses:

• Manufacturing -8,700
• Construction -6,200
• Financial Activities -2,200
• Natural Resources & Mining -200

*Educational and health services is in the private sector. Government includes public education and public health services.

The State’s private sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 New York employers conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Monthly payroll employment estimates are preliminary and subject to revision as more data becomes available the following month. The federal government calculates New York State’s unemployment rate based partly upon the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.
