Jobless Rate Continues to Drop in Westchester

Six of the 10 counties in New York with the lowest unemployment rate are in the Hudson Valley.

The New York State Department of Labor Tuesday released preliminary local area unemployment rates for April 2016.

The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate ticked up from 4.8 percent in March to 4.9 percent in April 2016.

  • Tompkins County (3.6%)
  • Columbia County (3.7%)
  • Nassau County (3.7%)
  • Putnam County (3.7%)
  • Saratoga County (3.7%)
  • Rockland County (3.9%)
  • Albany County (4.0%)
  • Dutchess County (4.0%)
  • Westchester County (4.0%)
  • Orange County (4.1%)
  • Suffolk County (4.1%)

In the Dutchess-Putnam metro area, unemployment dropped to 3.9 percent in April 2016 compared to 4.4 percent in April 2015.

In that same time frame in the Orange-Rockland-Westchester metro area, unemployment dropped to 4.0 percent from 4.5 percent, state officials said.

For Kingston, the rate dropped to 4.3 percent from 4.9 percent.

For the non-metro counties, including all upstate counties, the rate went to 5.5 percent from 6.1 percent in April 2015.
