Jobless Rates Tick Upward in the Hudson Valley

YORKTOWN, NY — New York's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 5.0 percent in September 2016, up slightly from from 4.8 percent, according to new data from the New York State Department of Labor.

The state trend stayed true at the local level. In August 2016, the unemployment rate in Putnam was 3.9 percent; Dutchess was 4.0 percent; Orange 4.2 percent and Westchester 4.2 percent. As of September, those rates had risen, though barely — to 4.1 percent for Putnam; 4.2 percent for Dutchess; 4.4 percent for Orange; and 4.4 percent for Westchester.

Columbia County maintained one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state.

Even though jobless rates ticked up in Dutchess and Putnam, the two joined Columbia in the department's list of the counties in New York State with the lowest unemployment rates in September 2016:

Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The State’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.
