Mahopac Students to Perform Anti-Bullying Reading at Library

When it comes to bullying prevention, sometimes it just takes “one.” That’s the idea behind the children’s book of the same name by Kathryn Otoshi. A reading of “One” will be performed at the Mahopac Public Library on March 23 from 2 to 3 pm by members of the Mahopac High School Gay Straight Alliance club. The performance is open to children of all ages and their families.

The book is about the color Blue, who gets along with all his fellow colors until Red comes along and starts bullying him. The other colors don’t stand up for Blue until One comes along and refuses to join in the bullying. The other colors quickly rally around Blue, and Red finally realizes the error of her ways.

“The book portrays a very simple bullying situation,” says Mahopac High School senior Gabrielle Zelley. “But it has a great message.”

“It’s important to show kids at an early age how to be kind and accepting of everyone,” says MHS sophomore James Valle. Members of the group hope the performance will empower younger children to stand up for each other in bullying situations.
