New Commercial Development Projects in Yorktown to Stimulate Economy and Create Jobs

Community leaders, business owners and elected officials say $150 million in economic development construction projects would stimulate the economy and create hundreds of jobs.

Several commercial developments in the town of Yorktown, which are already on the application process or about to go into it, are expected to bring in revenue and create hundreds of new jobs in the area. Some local leaders are expecting a major economic "boost."

The five projects, endorsed by the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce, are , ., , the of Mohegan Lake Motors and . Community leaders, business owners and elected officials announced the $150 million in economic development last week and expressed their support of the projects. 

"We need need to develop in order to raise commercial tax base, thus relieving homeowners in Yorktown," said Joe Visconti, president of the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce. "We believe Yorktown can hopefully avoid a predicted 2012 recession if these projects are expedited."

He said the projects would create jobs in construction and stimulate the local economy. None of the five projects would incur any expense on the Lakeland or Yorktown school systems. 

“Even in this tough economy, and throughout Westchester and beyond, we have businesses that need help to stay afloat, we have businesses that want to expand and we have businesses that want to move here," state senator Greg Ball (R, C- Patterson) said. "Our job in government, and at all levels of government, must be to get out of the way and let businesses do what they do best, which is stimulate the economy and create jobs. We need to remove barriers and unnecessary hurdles. Lets bend over backwards to help local business and by doing so, put local people back to work."

County legislator John Testa (R-Peekskill) said the commercial projects are a great opportunity for the town, the people they would attract, the businesses and land owners.  

"The property owners want to invest in this town," he said. "I can tell you as a former mayor how much this will get a boost for the town, the taxpayers, the job creation and the economy."

County legislator Michael Kaplowitz (D-Somers) said all levels of government should be working together and this was not about politics, but rather about job creation. 

"That's our number one priority -- to get the people back to work so they can keep their roof over their head and food on their table," Yorktown councilman Terrence Murphy said. 

"The Yorktown Chamber of Commerce is committed to bringing these projects to fruition in order to help our membership retain local jobs and to stimulate the local economy," Visconti said. "Now is the time for business, government and residents to secure the future of our town."
