Neighbor News

Restoring civility in Yorktown?

We won't get any closer to being neighbors if this persists.....

I drove all the way to Newburgh today to see Gosnell as the only theater in Westchester that was showing it (AMC New Rochelle) had seemingly caved in to liberal hysteria and abruptly canceled it despite popularity and profitability. Praise God that Orange County is not as obsessed with kowtowing to Planned Parenthood and the deranged direction of politics. What I found disturbing, aside from the brilliantly-portrayed content of the movie, was a lawn sign posted at the Underhill Avenue entrance to the southbound Taconic Parkway on my way home amidst several others displaying candidates' names. This one said "TRUMP MURPHY" with the familiar red circle and slash used in "no smoking" and other "do not do this" signage.

It's sad because the irrational and unhinged sentiment among our blue brethren, i.e. every Richard Fisher and Celeste Theis out there so desperately aching to force Gashi down everyone's throats, does not create unity among us. I refuse to disparage anyone, rather I merely state fact and call attention to the remarkable achievements of Terrence Murphy and Kevin Byrne as a basis for their re-election on Tuesday. Gashi appears to be a nice man but has nothing to show for his candidacy and is reputed to have lived in the city for most of his adult life, only recently moving back to his mother's home in Yorktown (or so it is alleged) solely to oppose Assemblyman Byrne. Two years ago someone called Higbie did the same, a Yonkers attorney who had only moved to Yorktown one year prior and ran because "the thought of a republican running unopposed was unbearable." It failed then and hopefully it will fail again so we may maintain the massive momentum spawned by these two dedicated public servants. Even at this very moment in this very same publication there are several articles about Terrence Murphy's notable achievements, though the recent scandal about Pete Harckham's close personal relationship with jailbird Joe Percoco is mentioned nowhere. That's fine. it's a free country.

Returning to the concept of the sign.....was it really necessary, whoever placed it there? Does Pete really think the "let's hate Trump" platform will inure to his benefit? It only worked once (last year) and at this point I believe normal, sane, sensible individuals are tired of the hysterics. That was proven with the Kavanaugh hearings. Why not try something new and exciting such as a meaningful agenda? Healthcare? Economy? Jobs? School safety? Immigration reform? Perhaps it's time to accept that Donald Trump will be president of the United States at least through 2020 and possibly 2024. At 5'1" I suspect I have a better chance of being recruited to the Boston Celtics than democrats taking control of the senate. There are already five to ten vulnerable democrat senate seats that will seemingly go to the republican challenger this year despite Soros and Bloomberg funding. People in states such as North Dakota, Missouri, Michigan, Tennessee, Texas, Florida and the like have far more backbone than we sophisticated ones in New York. It's time we grow a pair and move on.

And so I ask whoever is putting these offensive signs out there, please be honorable and remove them. We did not disparage Obama despite his obvious failures (economic downturn, soaring unemployment, funding terror and bowing down to militants in the middle east). God forbid anyone uttered a word, he/she would be instantly branded a racist. Yeah, right. I was certainly not thrilled with his tenure but as an American I accepted that he won both elections fairly and I survived those eight treacherous years. Now we see so much progress and yet we in these bold blue states refuse to acknowledge extraordinary accomplishments simply because some hyper-sensitive folks don't like the tweets.

Get over it. Nothing you do will change anything at least until the end of 2020. You have already muddled through the first four of five reactions: shock, anger, denial, depression. Time to concede the fifth: acceptance.

Here's to removing the offensive displays of political incivility. Hopefully when I drive by on Friday it will be gone. If not, well, remember only I took the high road. I wish you would meet me halfway.
