Somers, Yorktown on Best Places to Retire in New York List

Heritage Hills was the top local community. What do you think?

New York isn't generally thought of as a great place to retire. In fact, the state is ranked as the seventh worst state for retirees, mainly thanks to its high cost of living, according to WalletHub.

But new rankings from Niche.com suggest that if you are planning to retire in New York, Long Island or the lower Hudson Valley is the place to be.

Hudson Valley and Long Island communities, including Heritage Hills in Somers, dominate Niche's 2016 Best Places to Retire rankings for New York. Heritage Hills led the locals on the list, clocking in at No. 8. Yorktown made it onto the list at No. 93.

The best place to retire in the country, according to the rankings: Fortuna Foothills in Arizona. The top 100 national list, however, is filled with sun-drenched Florida spots — and they don't mean Florida, NY (though it does make it into New York's Top 100).

The rankings take into account key factors, such as weather, crime rates, residents 65 and older, housing costs, and access to amenities such as restaurants, golf courses, exercise facilities, and doctors, in an attempt to measure the appeal of an area for retirement, Niche says.
