With the good weather coming people will be inspired to start running outside. However, one of the most common reasons that bring runners to our clinic is knee pain.
Tips to help prevent knee pain:
- Stretching before and after running. Focusing on your hip flexors, quadriceps, illiotibial bands, hamstrings, and calves.
- Incorporating a warm up before going into a run.
- Wearing appropriate foot wear. (Something supportive and comfortable).
- Increasing your distance and speed gradually.
- Selection of your running terrain based on your fitness level and experience. Beginners should stay on a flat terrain versus running up and down hills.
- Incorporating a hip strengthening program. Focusing on your hip abductors (the muscles on the outside of your hips and upper legs).
- And, with any activity, always staying hydrated and having a well balanced diet.
