Two Brothers' "Cutting Edge" Barber, Hair Salon and Tanning Business Opens in Yorktown

The grand opening for Cutting Edge, located on Mahopac Avenue in Yorktown, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3.

Two brothers have opened up a beauty salon together in Yorktown and will celebrate its grand opening this Saturday. They said their idea is for a "one-stop-shop" and hope to attract customers with their competitive prices and welcoming atmosphere.

Michael and Chris Baron's "" is located at 250 Mahopac Avenue in Yorktown, off of Route 6. They chose that specific location because the space they occupy used to be a barber shop and they said it would be familiar to it previous customers.

Michael, 26, used to work as an exterminator before becoming a barber four years ago. He said it was something his father encouraged him to do and was supportive of. Michael worked at the Jefferson Valley Mall for a year before opening up his own business.

"I thought it was a good opportunity to jump on," he said of opening a business with his brother.

Chris, 28, worked in the public relations and marketing field for five years. He said he is good with the business end of handling the salon, while his brother Michael will be in charge of the hands on work.

"I like the customer service side of it and making sure I'm making people happy," he said.

Both brothers grew up in the Bronx before they moved to Croton; and they now live in Putnam Valley.

Chris Baron said their salon is priced well and competitevely and want their full service salon to be classy and have a great atmosphere. Before opening doors on Oct. 17, they had been renovating for two months and had their mother help with the decorating aspect -- from the pictures hung on the wall to the flowers on the tables.

The family-owned business offers haircuts for men and women, extensions, color treatments, styling, makeup application, airbrush tanning and more.

"It's recession proof," Michael Baron said of the business. "Everybody needs a shave or a haircut."

While customers, mindful of their spending habits, might spread the appointments they make and come come every other week, instead of every week, he said, they offer services that people are willing to spend money on.

Cutting Edge currently has six employees and the brothers see this as their investment. They want to further develop their business and open up more salons in the future.

"As brothers we tend to butt heads but other than that it's a walk in the park," Michael Baron said of the challenges of working together and operating a business.

Chris said they get along and some of the rewards of having a family-owned business is that they trust each other.

"We're family," he said. "We cover each other and there is no questions about it. We trust each other not to do anything to hurt the business."

Cutting Edge's grand opening is Saturday, Dec. 3. That day, customers will get 40 percent off all services in the shop, and 20 percent off retail products. They will also receive a free product gift bag with the purchase of a service.

"We want people to feel comfortable," Chris said of his goals for the business. "As long as we're pleasing our customers and when they walk out, they're happy with the experience."
