Where Are New York's Lowest Jobless Rates?

YORKTOWN, NY — The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for August 2016, and only one of the counties in the lower Hudson Valley stayed on the department's Top 10 list.

Actually, this time around it's a Top 11 List due to a three-way tie.

The counties in New York State with the lowest unemployment rates in August 2016 include:

  • Hamilton County (2.9%)
  • Columbia County (3.3%)
  • Saratoga County (3.5%)
  • Ontario County (3.7%)
  • Tompkins County (3.7%)
  • Genesee County (3.8%)
  • Washington County (3.8%)
  • Yates County (3.8%)
  • Nassau County (3.9%)
  • Putnam County (3.9%)
  • Seneca County (3.9%)

So what about Dutchess? Just off the chart with a 4.0 percent unemployment rate. Orange? 4.2 percent. Westchester? 4.2 percent.

In addition, the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased over the month, from 4.7 percent to 4.8 percent in August 2016.

Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The State’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.
