Yorktown High School, Yorktown Police Dept Begin New Student Club

Law Enforcement Club begins at Yorktown High School organized by Yorktown Police Department

There is a new conversation happening between Yorktown High School students and the town’s Yorktown Police Department. Initiated by the police in an outreach effort to the community’s youngsters, the department has organized a Law Enforcement Club at the school, the first one of its kind in the community.

It will be an after-school club meeting twice a month. Students will have the opportunity to learn about forensics, fingerprinting, police functions and local laws as well as ask questions they have about police work.

“We decided it was a good time to engage the students and give them a chance to find out what we do and to ask questions. We want to meet the kids and interact with them,” said Chief Robert Noble, who came to the high school on Oct. 20 to talk about the new club and introduce himself to the students. “The department is committed to preserving the rights of citizens, and foremost, the protection of life and property in our community,” he added.

The department provides around-the-clock police protection to the town’s nearly 40,000 residents.

Yorktown High School students are accustomed to seeing police in the school hallways and on the district campus with the presence of School Resource Officers. Officer Doerr, a familiar face on campus, will lead the club.

“It’s a great way to educate the students about law enforcement and to build positive relationships with the local department,” Principal Joseph DeGennaro said.

Based on the reception Chief Noble and Officer Robert Doerr received at lunchtime when they were promoting their club it seems there was some genuine interest.

The department plans to also offer this program at Lakeland High School, said Chief Noble.
