Yorktown HS Team Wins Sportsmanship Award

Yorktown HS Varsity Girls Basketball Team Gets Sportsmanship Honor - Glassman Memorial Sportsmanship Award

YORKTOWN, NY -- The Section One Girls Basketball Coaches Association selected Yorktown High School Girls Varsity basketball team as this year’s recipient of the third annual Bill Glassman Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

The award recognizes a team’s fine sportsmanship in the game of basketball.

Glassman was a former girls basketball coach and Section One Chairman for girls basketball. He coached the Yorktown Girls Varsity basketball team for two years. A committee of coaches and members selects each year’s honored team.

Glassman was very instrumental in bringing the Section One Girls’ Basketball Tournament to the Westchester County Center.

Yorktown Athletic Director Fio Nardone was proud of his team’s selection.

“This is a great honor for the girls basketball team, Head Coach Kevin Clark and the entire Yorktown community. And it demonstrates how these young athletes develop their individual skills and also work well as a team,” Nardone said. “Bill was a great man and model coach. We are proud and honored that our team will be highlighted with this recognition.”

This year’s team was also coached by assistants Bob Clark and Melissa Golio.

The Glassman Award is just another example of the emphasis placed on character and citizenship in the Yorktown Central School District. In late January, the district was selected as a New York State School District of Character for 2016 by the NY State School of Character program, sponsored through a partnership with The Academy for Character Education at The Sage Colleges in Troy.

The Yorktown team was recognized Sunday, Feb. 28, at halftime of the girls’ AA final at Westchester County Center.

Last year, Hendrick Hudson Schools’ girls basketball team won the award.
