Yorktown Patch Weekly Sports Report

Hornet field hockey trio to play in college and the debut of Athletes of the Week.

Lakeland field hockey

The last two years, Lakeland midfielders Leanne Goldblatt and Nikki Schultz and goalie Amanda DiDomzio were integral parts of the Lakeland field hockey squads that won back-to-back state championships.

Now they are looking forward to winning  championships when they play in college. Goldblatt signed a national letter of intent with Ball State University in Indiana, and DiDomzio signed with Colgate University in upstate New York on Feb. 7. Schultz will sign a national letter of intent to play at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., on Feb. 14.

“These three girls were able to sign at such prestigious Division I programs is a result of their hard work and determination since the sixth grade,” Lakeland field hockey coach Sharon Sarsen said. “All three girls have made field hockey a year-long commitment attending numerous camps, clinics, tournaments and showcases.”

All three players have succeeded in the USA Futures Field Hockey Program, attending the National Tournament, Junior Olympics, the National Hockey Festival and the National Indoor Tournaments which are all selection programs.  This has exposed them to college coaches, according to Sarsen.

“All three girls are excellent student athletes and skilled field hockey players,” Sarsen said.

Ball State University is a great fit for Goldblatt, according to Sarsen.

“She connected with the campus as well as the field hockey staff and they have a great business program,” Sarsen said.

Colgate has an excellent balance of academics and athletics and it wanted a goalie like DiDomizio that could come right in, start and help the team improve immediately. It also has academic courses which will allow DiDomizio to pursue medicine.

DiDomizio will be the fourth Lakeland Hornet to play field hockey at Colgate. Alethea Bailey, Courtney Collins and Jen Weisholz are the other three.

Schultz was spotted during her sophomore year by Quinnipiac University.

“She decided this program fit her perfectly with location, academics and field hockey,” Sarsen said.

Sarsen expects all three to be successful student athletes at their respective schools and programs.

“All three athletes are used to working hard year round and will adapt easily to Division I field hockey due to all of their hard work ethic, their prior experiences and extensive field hockey background,” Sarsen said.
