Yorktown Roadway Renamed for Fallen Hero

Two roadways were renamed in Westchester County.

YORKTOWN, NY — Portions of two Westchester highways have been renamed in honor of fallen heroes, one of which is in Yorktown.

Govenor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement that he signed measures to rename the roadways Friday.

“These heroic New Yorkers dedicated their lives to protecting this nation and made the ultimate sacrifice white fighting to uphold its principles and ideals,” Cuomo said.

“These designations will help ensure the valor and dedication exhibited by Captain Carpenter and Lance Corporeal Jackowski will be memorialized and remembered for generations to come,” he said.

Army Captain Clayton Carpenter Memorial Highway:
Army Captain Clayton Carpenter, 31, from Cortlandt Manor, Westchester County, was tragically killed on January 15, 2014 during a training accident when the MH-60 Blackhawk he was piloting crashed near Hunter Army Air Field in Savannah, Georgia. Captain Carpenter's decorated military career included tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The bill, (S.7659/A.10247), renames a portion of State Route 118 in Yorktown, Westchester County, beginning at its intersection with Underhill Avenue, continuing north and terminating at the intersection with State Route 202, as the "Army Captain Clayton Carpenter Memorial Highway."
Marine Lance Corporal James J. Jackowski Memorial Highway:
Marine Lance Corporal James J. Jackowski, 20, of Lewisboro, Westchester County, was one of the 239 Marines tragically killed in the Beirut, Lebanon barracks bombings on October 23, 1983.
The bill, (S.6472/A.9029), renames the portion of State Route 35 in Lewisboro, beginning at the intersection with State Route 124 and ending at its intersection with Ridgefield Avenue, as the "Marine Lance Corporal James J. Jackowski Memorial Highway." This roadway runs directly past Corporal Jackowski's family home while he attended high school, and at the time of his death.
