PATIO SHOW: Holland Negative & The Bog w/ Doug Mcelvy

PAUL McDONALD Born in Alabama and baptized in the dive bars of the southeast, Paul McDonald first made noise with the Grand Magnolias, a roots-rock outfit, before catching fire in the public eye during American Idol’s 2011 run. When the bright lights blurred and the cameras turned, the man behind the voice slipped into the shadows where he did what real artists do: he lived, he lost, and he wrote. Retreating to Nashville, that holy city of reinvention, Paul stitched himself back together with worn boots, hard songs, and a new band called the Mourning Doves.
Now, the giant has stirred with the release of So Long to the Dark Side–a gospel-tinged reckoning wrapped in cosmic Americana and lit with songs that sound like they were scribbled on the edge of a breakdown and sung back from the brink. Raised on Petty, Parsons, and pain, Paul McDonald is not chasing trends; he’s conjuring something older and truer. His live performances are equal parts revival and rock séance.
In a breakthrough moment, Paul McDonald &amp; the Mourning Doves brought the songs of So Long to the Dark Side and more to the headline stage at the 17th Annual 30A Songwriters Festival in front of a wildly enthusiastic crowd that followed him to a couple of evening performances over the weekend and established him as the 2026 Festival buzz band. Throughout 2026, Paul will tour every market in the U.S. in support of the new record.
BLUE ROSES Blue Roses are an indie rock band with an emotive, ethereal edge. Their songs are expansive and immersive, crafted with intensity, artistry, and personal lyricism that makes the listener feel alive, unmistakably present, and deeply human.

THE DESLONDES When the Deslondes recorded their new covers album, they didn’t want to simply exalt their heroes and catalog their influences. They wanted to give their friends a boost as well. The poignant and powerful Don’t Let It Die Vol. 1 includes new interpretations of old songs by artists who’ve guided the band for years, including Swamp Dogg, Johnny Cash, and Clifton Chenier, alongside new songs by peers, tourmates, and collaborators, including Nick Woods, Pat Reedy, and the Kernel. “We have so many friends who are songwriters, and we just love their music so much,” says John James Tourville, who plays guitar and occasionally the fiddle. “Riley and Dan are always kicking around awesome, inspiring old songs for us to do, but for this album we really wanted to do some friend songs, too.”
Don’t Let It Die maps out a community of likeminded musicians given to hopping trains, crowding tour vans, and blurring the lines between styles and scenes. “These songs are very much a close part of our lives,” says Riley Downing, who sings and usually plays guitar. “They’re all part of our circle, this big organism that keeps influencing itself. It’s mysterious, though, which musicians get heard and which ones don’t. I think we’re in a good position to tip our cap to the friends we look up to, and hopefully it will benefit our buddies. When The Da Vinci Code became a global sensation in 2003 - quickly followed by a Hollywood movie starring Tom Hanks - it popularized a long-simmering debate about the true identity and influence of Mary Magdalene, often called "the apostle to the apostles." The Da Vinci Code supports the controversial idea that Mary Magdalene was only an essential figure in the life of Jesus, but central to a spiritual vision long suppressed by the church: a softer, more feminine version of Christianity.
Meggan Watterson, author of the influential book Mary Magdalene Revealed, will explore Mary's new popularity in her Asheville debut as she discusses "The Power of Mercy in the Gospel of Mary.” Watterson will explore what’s missing in today’s teachings on Christianity, and how it can be recovered.
A theologian and scholar trained at Harvard Divinity School, Watterson has gained widespread popularity with her highly personal exploration of Mary Magdalene that blends vulnerability, compassion, personal power and the divine feminine.
The free event sponsored by <a href="https://houseofmercyavl.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">House of Mercy Asheville</a> happens Tuesday, June 9 from 7-9 p.m. at The Mule, 131 Sweeten Creek Rd., Asheville.
Modern interest in Mary Magdalene catapulted in the 1960s and 1970s with America’s rising interest in civil rights and feminism.
The Gospel of Mary was first discovered in Egypt in 1896. It took nearly six decades before it was published in 1955.

ZG Smith is the Los Angeles-born, Nashville-based son of an English professor mother and a shipwreck diver and underwater archaeologist father. For over ten years, he fronted the band Smooth Hound Smith who headlined tours in the US, Europe, and the UK and supported artists like The Chicks, Collective Soul, Trombone Shorty, Jamestown Revival, and many more. Following the release of their third album in 2019 and a month-long European tour in February 2020, the band’s eventual hiatus caused Smith to refocus towards other artistic pursuits. “I started seeking out music again like I did when I was younger. I realized that I had been so focused on Smooth Hound Smith and had been trying to push the band forward, that I stopped listening to music just for enjoyment. Because of the pandemic, I had time, so I dug a massive hole in my backyard, leveled it off, and laid a patio of over 1,200 bricks, all by hand. It took me about a month. I would just be out there all day in the sun listening to North African desert blues, EDM, ‘90s hip hop, or bizarre, outsider folk music. A lot of that stuff really informed the music I ended up creating months later.” Madison Hughes makes music that lives in the in-between — the space between falling apart and finding your footing. Her sound pulls from the women who defined late ’90s Americana — Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Mazzy Star — and roots it in something country-blues and lived-in.
