A carefully curated lineup performing original music, giving audiences an exclusive first look at Nashville’s next generation of talent. NEAN celebrates creativity, storytelling, and the vibrant future of the city’s musical landscape.
This intimate, acoustic showcase presents six of Nashville’s most exciting emerging artists in a setting designed for listeners who appreciate songwriting and nuance. Each performer shares original music, fostering connection and highlighting artistry. The evening offers a thoughtfully curated experience of diverse voices and styles that represents the unique musical landscape that is Music City.

Experience a profound musical dialogue between two world-class artists who have dedicated their lives to building bridges through melody and message. David LaMotte and Chinobay join forces for a unique collaborative performance that weaves together the rich folk traditions of the American South and the vibrant musical heritage of Uganda.
David LaMotte: A globally recognized songwriter, author, and activist, David has performed over 3,500 concerts across five continents. His music is a masterclass in storytelling; his latest album,&nbsp;Still, dominated the Folk Radio charts, and his song&nbsp;“September Me”&nbsp;reached number one in 2022. A veteran of Merlefest and the Auckland Folk Festival, David brings an intricate guitar style and a spirit of social hope to the stage.
Chinobay: A musician, educator, and cultural ambassador from Uganda, Chinobay grew up immersed in the traditional music of the Kanyange king’s palace. Today, he is a master of diverse African instrumentation and a storyteller who showcases the richness and humanity of the African continent. His performances feature the Kora (West African harp-lute), Kalimba (thumb piano), Tamani (talking drum), and the Ugandan Endongo.

In addition to her 12 released albums and vibrant coaching career, Rebecca has written and published two books of poetry and created numerous paintings of fine art. Her philanthropy includes serving with Blue Sky Bridge (a child advocacy organization), The Women’s Foundation of Colorado, Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, One Tree Planted, Inc., and International Rescue Committee (IRC), to name just a few.
Delightfully insightful songwriter Marilyn Walker sprinkles the lyrical storytelling style of John Prine with a touch of Winnie the Pooh. Her eclectic background of ecosystem science, renewable energy, and activism drives her striking lyrics and enthusiastic performances. Her first studio album,&nbsp;At the Jamboree, was focused on children but veiled in adult themes, i.e., delight plus insight. She brings whimsy and humor to her writing and performances, whether she’s telling the true story of the fungus that is named after her, or going full on bawdy (when no children are present!) with her parody “Walking Around Naked” or her folk punk “Boyfriend in a Body Cast,” which she performs as her alternate identity of Stalker Walker. But she’s often tender and sweet in her approach, finding those moments in her own life that are relatable and touching. Marilyn is currently working on a new studio album,&nbsp;Water’s Gonna Rise, focusing on climate change as well as the human impacts of the rapidly changing world – homelessness, addiction, and injustice. Whether audiences are laughing, crying, or thinking, they almost all include one word in their description – delightful.

Ugandan musician Chinobay and blind born singer-songwriter Jordan Scheffer create a powerful musical conversation that bridges continents, traditions, and genres. Rooted in African rhythms, storytelling, and global fusion, their performances weave together the warm, expressive voice of Jordan Scheffer with Chinobay’s masterful musicianship on instruments including the Kora, Kalimba, Endongo, and Talking drum. Together, they offer an experience that is both deeply intimate and joyfully alive — blending Afro-funk, folk, soul, and world music into a sound that feels borderless. Their connection on stage is built on mentorship, friendship, and a shared belief in music as a force for healing, cultural exchange, and connection.

A New York City native, Koh Kazama is a concert guitarist and educator exposing audiences to the endless possibilities of the classical guitar. He started his guitar studies at the age of six, after being inspired by a Japanese rock musician. His diverse repertoire ranges from early music played on period instruments to contemporary music using electronic effects.

Dr. Kazama has performed in renowned venues, festivals, and concert series, including Carnegie Hall, Miami International GuitART Festival, Long Island Guitar Festival, Killington Music Festival, Symphony Space, Webster Hall, WNYC New Sounds Live series, Morse Hall (Juilliard), Mid-Hudson Classical Guitar Society, and Yale Guitar Extravaganza. Recent highlights include concerts with Grammy-nominated ensemble Seraphic Fire, a solo concert tour in Japan, and performing as the featured artist at Killington Music Festival’s season finale chamber music concert. He has also premiered works by a wide range of prominent composers, including Michael White (Juilliard), David Lang (Yale), William Anderson (Queens College), Paula Matthusen (Wesleyan), and Kendall Williams.
Dr. Kazama holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University, where he was a scholarship student and teaching assistant of the guitar department. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in psychology, Master of Music, and Artist Diploma at Yale University. He received a full scholarship to attend Yale, and he was the recipient of the Eliot Fisk Prize, which was awarded to an outstanding guitarist whose artistic achievements and dedication have contributed greatly to the department. He attended LaGuardia Arts High School in New York City, where he majored in cello and was part of the LaGuardia Symphony Orchestra. His major teachers have included Jerry Willard, Benjamin Verdery, Simon Powis, Liam Wood, Nadav Lev, and David Gonzalez.
Dr. Kazama is also a dedicated teacher who has experience teaching guitar to students of various levels and ages. He is currently on the faculty at New World School of the Arts, a partner of Miami Dade College, University of Florida, and Dade County Public Schools in Miami. He has previously taught as a guitar instructor at Yale University and Stony Brook University. He is also a former faculty member and alumnus of Third Street Music School Settlement, the longest-running community music school in the United States. He is also the director of GuitarFest at New World School of the Arts, an annual event of workshops, masterclasses, and performances for the Miami community.
In addition to his teaching and performing, Dr. Kazama has contributed publications and learning resources to the guitar community. He co-founded Monologue Publications, which is dedicated to creating solo and chamber music arrangements for guitar that include thoroughly researched historical and stylistic information for the player. He is also the co-founder of Leyenda, an online graded classical guitar database.
