Cornelius, Davidson Crews Free Driver From Mangled I-77 Crash

Rescue teams from Cornelius and Davidson had to cut the driver out of the car mangled by a collision with an interstate guardrail Monday.

CORNELIUS, NC — Rescue teams from Cornelius and Davidson were forced to cut the top off a car Monday in order to free a driver trapped in a vehicle mangled in a collision with a guardrail along Interstate 77 southbound. The driver was later transported to the hospital.

Fire rescue crews from Cornelius and Davidson responded to the April 23 collision occurred shortly after 4 p.m., and found the car had been impaled on the guard rails.

“All crews worked to provide patient care, remove the guardrails from the vehicle and then begin removing the mangled vehicle from around the patient,” Cornelius fire officials said in a Facebook post.

The crews had the driver freed from the car in about 15 minutes, the fire department said.

The crash occurred as heavy rains drenched the Queen City region, leaving driving conditions treacherous. More rain is expected throughout the week with a chance in the forecast every day until the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
