Cornelius Police Warn Against Coronavirus Stimulus Payment Scams

Coronavirus stimulus payment scams are among the newest frauds police are warning against. Here are some tips from Cornelius police.

CORNELIUS, NC — Residents should be wary of scammers using the new coronavirus and the forthcoming stimulus payments, the Cornelius Police Department warns.

“If you receive a call, do not engage with scammers,” CPD said. “Just hang up and report the scam.”

Here are some tips from CPD:

  • Be alert for phone scams.
  • The Internal Revenue Service, Treasury Department or any other government agency will not contact you by phone, email or text to collect information for stimulus payment processing.
  • State agencies will also not call, email or text you to collect information of a fee to process a stimulus payment.
  • Be alert for phishing scams.
  • Watch for suspicious emails or texts with links or attachments requesting information regarding a stimulus payment. Do not click the link or open the attachment.
