1. Truist bank cutting 253 jobs in eastern North Carolina (reflector.com) — Truist is eliminating 97 jobs in Greenville and 156 in nearby Winterville as it exits a $5.5 billion near-prime auto loan business handled by Regional Acceptance Corporation. Layoffs are scheduled for February 2027 in Winterville and July 2027 in Greenville, with the bank promising severance, job search help, and possible placement in other roles.
   

2. Prayer vigil for James Richardson demands freedom following denied hearing (witn.com) — Residents gathered outside the Pitt County Courthouse in Greenville to pray and protest in support of James Richardson, who has spent 17 years in prison and was recently denied a new hearing. Organizers, including a pastor once wrongfully convicted himself, are urging the district attorney to review the case and plan continued protests, letter-writing, and phone campaigns.
   

3. Five displaced after fire tears through Greenville duplex; no injuries reported (wcti12.com) — A Saturday afternoon fire heavily damaged a single-story duplex on South Pointe Drive in Greenville, displacing five residents but causing no injuries. Greenville Fire and Rescue, aided by nearby departments, brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes, and the American Red Cross is helping those forced from their homes while the cause is investigated.
   

4. ECU Black Alumni Network to debut Black Alumni Excellence Awards in Greenville (wcti12.com) — Greenville residents and ECU alumni are invited to a new Black Alumni Excellence Awards ceremony on Oct. 9 at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church. The evening will honor several Black ECU leaders, recognize students and Golden Pirates, and feature a keynote and ECU Gospel Choir performance celebrating Black Pirates' contributions to the university and community.
   

5. 'Riley's Army' hosts Hearts of Gold Gala, raising awareness for childhood cancer (witn.com) — Greenville-area families affected by childhood cancer are the focus of Riley's Army's Hearts of Gold Gala, coming Saturday to Rock Springs Center in Greenville. The Winterville-based nonprofit's biggest annual fundraiser will feature music, speakers, and a silent auction, with proceeds supporting children battling cancer and their families across Eastern North Carolina.
