CMPD Launches Investigation After Boy's Fatal Fall Off Boat

CMPD has launched a death investigation following the drowning death of a 13-year-old boy in Huntersville Sunday afternoon.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC — A death investigation is underway following the drowning of a 13-year-old boy who fell off a boat on Mountain Island Lake in Huntersville Sunday afternoon, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police received an emergency call for service for the 5200 block of Sample Road shortly around 3:15 p.m. Sunday, CMPD said. His body was recovered and he was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m.

According to authorities, the victim was on a boat with four adults and three other children, who were playing on and around a large floating pad tied off the anchored boat.

“The victim was not wearing a life-jacket at the time,” CMPD said. “At this point in the investigation detectives have not found signs of foul play, however the Medical Examiner’s Office still has to complete their part of the investigation and determine the cause of death.”

The victim’s name has not been released by authorities due to his age.

CMPD said that anyone with informaiton about the incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and ask to speak to a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
