‘Cone Weed’: Huntersville’s Quirky Holiday Monument Disappears
The decked out weed growing through a traffic cone that inspired a song and charitable donations has inexplicably disappeared.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC -- Fame may be fleeting, but in Huntersville it has a lifespan of about one week. Days after hitting the limelight, Huntersville’s beloved “Cone Weed” -- a weed growing through a traffic cone and decorated for the holidays -- has disappeared from it’s roadside perch along Beatties Ford Road.
The firemen across the street think they know what happened.
“Residents reported seeing a road crew in a yellow truck remove the cone and all the decorations,” Huntersville Fire Department tweeted Monday morning. “We did not see it happen and no one stopped by the fire station to tell us they were removing it.” A few decorations remained scattered behind, which firemen rehung on what was left of the weed.

The news comes as a blow to the community that rallied around the unlikely and thoroughly quirky Christmas decoration. Last week, the wacky weed that had grown for about a year at its spot located across the road from the Huntersville Fire Station on Beatties Ford Road was decorated anonymously with tinsel and holiday lights, wrapped presents and Christmas yard signs. A day later, Cone Weed had it’s own hashtag (#ConeWeed) on Twitter and a local graphic designer created a T-shirt design for sale with all proceeds going to help local families in need.
Within five days, the sale of 587 Cone Weed T-shirts and other items brought almost $4,000, which will be matched fully through the charity Hope Match.

Then, Cone Weed got it’s own holiday song.
The fire department has launched an informal investigation into what happened to Cone Weed, and in the meantime is focusing on all the roadside growth has done in such a short period of time. “Thank you to everyone that helped this Weed movement make a difference in our community,” HFD said.

Sad news from the #Ville. #ConeWeed is gone. Residents reported seeing a road crew in a yellow truck remove it this morning. We did not see anything. We found a few decorations scattered along the ground; so we rehung those. We’re looking into what happened... #OneTownOneWeed pic.twitter.com/Nt9utP3wIj
