Iredell Inmate Charged After 2 Officers Injured At Jail

A detention center officer fractured a leg bone and another injured their thumb when an inmate caused a disturbance, ICSO said.

MOORESVILLE, NC — An Iredell County inmate in a holding cell at the county’s detention center has been charged with felony assault after a melee in a holding cell left one officer with a fractured leg bone and another with an injured thumb, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m. Jan. 6 when the inmate, identified as Khaleel Mangum, 22, of Charlotte, “began causing a disturbance within the holding cell he was in,” according to a statement by ICSO.

“Mangum had been moved to the holding cell to maintain security in the facility due to previous incidents involving him,” ICSO said.

Detention officers directed Mangum to step outside the cell, and he was “non-compliant” when they attempted to escort him out, ICSO said. “Additional officers responded to assist, which resulted in Mangum being subdued. During the altercation two detention officers were injured.”

Mangum, who was at the detention center for violating a domestic violence protective order, was charged with two counts of felony assault on a person employed at a state or local detention facility.
