Iredell County Schools Dismissing Early Due To Weather

School officials made the call Monday morning to cut the school day short for all Iredell County schools after an updated weather forecast.

MOORESVILLE, NC -- Schools in Iredell County will be dismissing before lunchtime Monday due to potential winter weather, according to school officials.

“Reports of incoming inclement weather have necessitated the decision to close schools on an early release schedule today, Monday, Jan. 8, 2018,” Iredell-Statesville Schools said in an announcement Monday morning.

Elementary schools will dismiss at 11 a.m., with middle and high schools dismissing at 11:45 a.m. All after-school activities including Prime Time are canceled, the school system said.

Mooresville Graded School District is also dismissing class early. Grades 7th through 12th will be dismissed at 11 a.m., and all Kindergarten through 6th grade students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m.

“While we realize at the time of the precipitation the temperature is forecasted to be above freezing, there is concern that after several days of extremely cold weather the roads will not be above freezing resulting in potentially icy conditions,” MGSD officials said in a statement.

According to forecasters, warmer spring-like temperatures are on their way this week, but said there’s a chance for winter weather Monday due to rain moving into the region in the afternoon.

“While the precipitation is most likely to fall as rain, a brief period of light freezing rain cannot be ruled out,” the National Weather Service said in a hazardous weather outlook Jan. 8. “Interests in these areas should closely monitor the latest weather information throughout the day, as even trace amounts of freezing rain can cause travel problems.”
