Here are the top stories in Mooresville today:
1. "Alexa, open the market" is how Cornell Harris opens Buddy's Seafood every morning. "YeaYeah!" the divide responds, in a manner that mimics Harris's son: "That's something my son always said," Harris said. "To get to hear that every morning reminds me of why we do what we do." Buddy's Seafood is a family-run, local seafood market chain owned and operated by Harris and his immediate family. Along with the automated morning call-and-response, the business name is also a tribute to his son, Cornell "Buddy" Harris Jr., who was only 18 years old when suddenly passed away in June. Buddy has always been a fixture of the family business, back when it used to run under the name Harris Brothers Seafood every week at the Moorseville Farmers Market. At the link, learn more about the Moorseville seafood staple—more than just a business.
2. Cabarrus Arts Council is shining a spotlight on the community. Looking back at 2022, the Council is highlighting a successful year of art: All the way back in January, Liz Fitzgerald joined the Council as its new executive director and immediately pitched in during an art delivery for an upcoming exhibition. On Roger Day, schoolchildren from Cabarrus country and Kannapolis were entertained with performances by Cabarrus Arts Council's Students Take Part in the Arts program. 2022 also saw the launch of a new series called Art on the Go which brings arts and craft projects into communities. Celebrating all of these milestones and more, the Council has a jam-packed week ahead, full of events and performances to carry us into the new year. Check out the schedule at the link.
3. Adoption fees have been waived this week at at Iredell County Animal Services. As we get ready to enter the new year, could adopting a furry friend into the family be on your resolutions list? All of the pets up for adoption this week at 430 Bristol Dr. have been spayed and neutered—and adoption fees have been waived!
