Guns Allowed In Church Services At Schools Under NC Bill

Bill proposed by an Iredell County Republican that would allow guns in churches operating out of school buildings advances to the Senate.

MOORESVILLE, NC — Bringing a gun to Sunday school class along with a Bible might not be such a far-fetched scenario under a bill that passed the North Carolina House March 27.

Iredell County Representative and native Rena Turner proposed the bill, saying the idea was prompted by a local church, according to The News & Observer.

“They’re a welcoming church — no snakes, no funny business going on,” she told the newspaper, adding that some church members feared the congregation might become a terrorist target due to its overseas missions. “They feel particularly vulnerable at their services. They want their security team to be able to protect their parishioners if there should be an emergency.”

The bill would allow those with concealed weapon permits to bring weapons to K-12 school facilities that are used for weekend church services. The bill passed with a vote of 82-34 and now advances to the Senate.
