Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The Raleigh City Council unanimously approved spending $500,000 on a program to help renters by preventing evictions and providing legal support for tenants facing eviction. The $500,000 in funds from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 would go to assistance and prevention. In April, the U.S. Census Bureau Household Pulse Survey found that 10.8% of renters said they were very likely and 43.7% of renters said they were somewhat likely to be evicted in the next two months. (WRAL) State leaders are also working to distribute COVID relief money to small businesses in the state. (WRAL)
  2. Wake County Manager David Ellis has submitted a $1.7 billion budget plan for the next fiscal year. Included in the plan is a 1.5 cent property tax increase, a pay raise for county employees, and new slots in Wake EMS and fire departments. The Wake County Board of Commissioners is considering a 132% pay raise for commissioners, as they currently make around $28,000 annually, but often work more than 60 hours per week. (CBS17, WRAL)
  3. Wake County leaders are set to receive $35 million from the nationwide opioid settlement over the next 18 years. On Monday, assistant county manger Denise Foreman confirmed that Wake County has already received $1.3 million. Foreman presented two options to commissioners, and now the county is looking for community feedback. (WRAL)
  4. Several of Raleigh's greenway trails will have a period of closure this spring for planned improvements. Part of Crabtree Creek Trail is closed through December 2022. Lake Lynn Loop Trail east side will be closed through November 1. Little Rock Trail between Chavis Way and Chavis Park is closed until the end of the year. Reedy Creek Trail under Edwards Mill Road is closed with a detour in place until the end of May 2023. (CBS17)
  5. A draft decision was leaked from the Supreme Court, poised to strike down the Roe V. Wade decision of 1973. Although the draft is not final and can be changed, it has been widely speculated previously that the current makeup of the Supreme Court would decide in such a manner. The decision's leak has prompted Governor Roy Cooper to respond saying that he will stand up for women's choice, and as primary voting is underway, the leak is likely to impact the election cycle, as abortion remains one of the most polarizing political issues to date.
