Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- A Knightdale church was given more than 19,000 pounds of chicken on Friday morning to distribute to the community. The donation came from Tyson Chicken and was received by the Greater Life Tabernacle of Praise Full Gospel Church. Organizers are grateful for the large blessing, but are a bit overwhelmed due to the small size of their ministry. (CBS17)
- Longtime Raleigh police officers are speaking out regarding the proposed pay raises. The City Council is looking to fill the police departments 168 vacancies that make up about 20% of the department's total by increasing the minimum pay in every category. Officers agree the pay floor increase makes sense, but call it a slap in the face that tenured officers are not set to receive a pay increase as well. (WRAL)
- The toddler who was rushed to the hospital after being found in a community pool has passed away. The 2-year-old (previously reported as 3-year-old) was found in the pool that was not scheduled to be opened until May. Many questions have arisen regarding how the situation came to pass with locks on the gates and other prevention points. So far no charges have been filed, and the story is a harrowing reminder to many that children age 6 months and up can receive swimming lessons. (WRAL)
- As gun violence becomes an increasingly notable issue in the community, business owners are stepping up to acknowledge their role in the city's improvement. James Montague was born in poverty and raised in southeast Raleigh, he is now president and CEO of F7 International. He will be the special guest at a community-led Stop the Violence rally set for April 30 in Raleigh. (abc11)
- Raleigh has ranked number 7 on a list of the best places to raise a family. American Home Shield put the list together on Friday compiling the top ten places in the country. The home warranty company points to a cost of living that is 5% below the national average and the number of restaurants and attractions the area holds. (CBS17)
