Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- The North Carolina Supreme Court has announced that it will take over a lawsuit that will determine when felony voters can regain the ability to vote. The challenge to the 1973 lawsuit will no longer see an appellate court decision before the Supreme Court hears it. The decision could come before the November midterm elections. (Spectrum News 1)
- A heavy police presence was on Rock Quarry Road, near Interstate 40, on Saturday afternoon. According to police, a Raleigh Police officer was involved in a shooting around 1:30 p.m. Police released a brief statement about the incident at 2:47 p.m. confirming the presence was due to an "officer-involved shooting incident." They said that "additional information will be made available as follow-up investigations progress. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
- After around a year of negotiations, WakeMed and UnitedHealthcare are down to less than a month to agree on rates and policies for health insurance coverage. If the two organizations cannot come to an agreement, those covered by UnitedHealthcare will be out-of-network at WakeMed hospitals. The contract that was agreed upon in 2015 is set to expire on May 31. One of WakeMed's main complaints is regarding the high number of denials for insurance reimbursement, while UnitedHealthcare has an issue with WakeMed's proposal for a 20% price increase for the first year of the new contract. - The severe storms that moved across central North Carolina on Friday reportedly sparked three home fires. Hail and 60 mph wind gusts were reported near RDU, and 13,000 Fayetteville residents were without power as of 8:35 p.m. (CBS17, WRAL)
- The American Red Cross has been working since 2014 to install free smoke alarms in homes across North Carolina. The "Sound the Alarm" campaign helps ensure that residents get out safely. Once a fire starts in the home, the American Red Cross says that you only have two minutes to get out. (CBS17)
