Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The Raleigh Police Department made an announcement on Wednesday regarding the 1977 rape and murder of 77-year-old Alma Jones. The case was rediscovered in 2011 during a transfer of older case boxes. Raleigh homicide detectives continued following up throughout the years and were able to get a DNA profile for the suspect that led them to a man named Paul Crowder. Paul Crowder was 35 at the time and lived in Jones' neighborhood, he passed away in 2015, but the family of Jones now has the answers they have long awaited. (abc11)
  2. Governor Roy Cooper was joined by members of the Coronavirus Task force to share the update at the Emergency Operations Center in Raleigh. In his update, Cooper took time to address the "Threats, bullying, and intimidation," at many board meetings. North Carolina health officials reported 4,381 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the total confirmed cases to date up to 1,350,697 with 15,811 individuals having died of complications with the virus. 3. March 22 may seem a distance away but the election for Wake County District Attorney is gaining steam. This week Emancipate NC is hosting a forum for current DA Lorrin Freeman, and opponent Damon Chetson. Although both candidates in the primary are Democrats, Freeman believes in a division of political beliefs and policy guidance whereas Chetson believes that Freeman is "far more regressive than Republican prosecutors in a progressive county." The debate will take place at 6:00 pm tonight at Chavis Community Center. (INDY Week)
  4. The Census Bureau has released all necessary information for the state to begin redrawing district lines. Although the General Assembly hasn't officially begun redrawing state legislative and congressional districts, many candidates have already announced plans to run/retire. With the Republican party in control and the party being just shy of a majority that can override gubernatorial vetoes, this process has the potential to shift the balance of power across the state. The development will cost approximately $121 million and will offer studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units as well as commercial space and other amenities.
