Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- The City of Raleigh has agreed to a $2 million settlement that will go to more than a dozen Black men wrongfully arrested and jailed on drug charges. The 15 men were arrested for selling heroin to a confidential informant, but after the drugs tested negative for controlled substance a lawsuit was filed alleging that the men were targeted by the informant. In late August the informant, Dennis Williams Jr. was indicted on five counts of obstruction of justice. (WRAL)
- A team of researchers at NC State, led by assistant professor Bryan Ormond has received a $500,000 grant from the CDC to help determine how well various face masks work. The team programmed an animatronic head and placed different masks on it while mimicking everyday movement. The team has already helped develop a standard for mask manufacturers to follow and face mask standards for acceptable performance. (CBS17)
- Exit 2A on the Beltline to Western Boulevard will be closing for good. The tight-looping exit is used to get to west Raleigh as well as NC State University. Drivers will now be directed to use Exit 2B which has been updated with a traffic light that allows drivers to turn left onto Western. The new interchange is a step toward widening that stretch of 440 from 4 lanes to 6. (abc11) Raleigh is also planning to widen Six-Forks Road from Rowan Street to Lynn Road. (WRAL)
- The students who withdrew from St. David's after a cellphone video caused controversy are considering legal action against the school. The cellphone video captured the two students singing along to a song that featured the N-word many times. After an online petition gained nearly 800 signatures pushing for them to be expelled, the students were told they must withdraw or be expelled. Now they are finding it difficult to get into another school, and are looking into taking legal action. (WRAL)
- The Supreme Court of North Carolina issued an order on Tuesday directing the parties in the case of NAACP v. Moore and Berger to submit new briefs addressing questions regarding the recusal of justices. The North Carolina Code of Judicial Conduct requests judges' recusal when an individual within three degrees of relationships is a party in the case. Plaintiffs have moved for Justices Phil Berger, Jr. and Tamara Barringer to recuse themselves from the case because of their interests in the matter. (INDY Week)
