Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- The City of Raleigh is taking another step to provide equity in government by hiring a new director of equity and inclusion. Dr. Aretina Hamilton led education initiatives on social justice at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, and will begin working in Raleigh on January 31. (WRAL)
- A Raleigh family is still anxious after a stray bullet flew into their home on New Year's Eve. Investigators believe that it was related to celebratory gunfire. Police responded to 34 calls related to shots fired over New Year's weekend. The family says that the bullet came in through the window and went straight through a wall. (WRAL)
- Experts with Zillow are predicting that the Raleigh housing market won't be slowing down any time soon. It is predicted to be the No. 3 market in the nation in 2022 of the 50 largest metro areas. They are also predicting home prices will rise 23.7 percent through November 2022. (CBS17)
- Testimony is underway in the North Carolina redistricting case. Plaintiffs have presented experts to testify and break down the maps that were approved by Republican lawmakers. Joewi Chen, a political science expert says that district by district a majority are partisan outliers, and Chris Cooper, a Western Carolina University professor says the maps are "cracking and packing" voters. Lawyers for Republican lawmakers will begin testimony next week. (abc11)
- Governor Cooper gave a COVID-19 briefing Tuesday at 2:00 pm after North Carolina set another daily percent positive record. He focused the message around vaccines and said that the 69% of North Carolinians who are fully vaccinated are the reason the state has not needed to revert to lockdowns. (abc11)
